What is CO Gas ?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Gas, also known as the silent
killer, is a colourless and odourless gas you cannot see, smell or
taste
it, and is produced
during the burning of fossil fuels. (Coal, Coke, Wood, Peat,
Charcoal, Gas, Oil and Petrol)
What are the symptoms ?
Carbon Monoxide gas replaces oxygen in the blood and produces
the toxic compound carboxyhemoglobin.
The initial symptoms are often mistaken for those of flu, feeling
drowsy, nausea, tiredness and headache.
Greater levels of CO in the blood can lead to brain damage
and possibly death.
It is vital that anyone suspected of CO poisoning are checked
for levels of CO in their body at the scene of the poisoning,
as when
they
are moved to another area the CO levels can reduce and subsequently
give a misleading indication to the original level of CO
What are the main types of domestic CO Detectors ?
In the 1960s the Taguchi sensor was developed, which used a metal
oxide semiconductor sensor. Because the tin oxide pellet needed
to be kept
continually hot, this type of sensor require a lot of power and
were better suited to being run only off mains electricity.
By the late 1980s a CO sensor was developed containing a substance
that is similar in structure to haemoglobin and which reacts with
CO Gas in a
similar way using a light emitting diode and photoelectric cell.
This was followed by the electrochemical sensing method, where
a platinum catalyst is used to promote a reaction between the CO
and
oxygen
in the air, enabling the detector to be designed to give a reading
in PPM (parts per million)
The patch or spot CO Detector uses redox chemistry and was originally
designed as a low cost visual safety
product for students and people on a limited income, but is now
also seen as a vital supplement to the electric
CO detector.
Why should I purchase a Spot CO Detector ?
Every home and residential building should ideally have an approved
BS 7860 or UL2034 audible CO Detector
installed ( For details of UK manufacturers and suppliers please
contact info@thecodetectorcompany.com )
CO Gas can concentrate in any part of a home or building and for
many it would too expensive and or
impractical to site an electric CO Detector in every area, i.e.,
Lounge, Kitchen, Utility Room, Dining Room, Hall,
Landing, Bedroom, Nursery, Guest Room, Study or Pets Sleeping Area,
etc, and this is where the Spot CO Detector
has also proved to be an ideal supplement to the electric model
and in its own right as an independent safety product.
As well as the home where else can I use the Spot CO detector
?
As the Spot CO Detector does not require any batteries or a power
source, this safety product is also ideal as an
instant visual safety product for detecting dangerous levels of
CO Gas in the Garage, Workshop, Caravan, Boat,
Hotel Room, Bed-Sit, Apartment, Office and Light Aircraft.
Who are The CO Detector Company ?
The CO Detector Company are a division of Caroline
Stuart International Limited, who include the spot
CO Detector in their product range.
Customers of the spot CO Detector include a wide range of blue
chip and prestige organisations such as,
Borough Councils, Safety Awareness Organisations, Local Airports,
Distributors, Trading Standards,
Environmental Companies, Promotional & Incentive Companies,
Safety Product Manufacturers, Mail Order
Companies, Utilities as well as leading National Retail
Multiples, Sheds and Mega Stores.
